Automating PCR Interpretation with MedX LIMS

Explore how MedX LIMS is revolutionizing PCR result interpretation with its digital PCR worksheet. Learn how this innovative tool automates the computation process, enhances diagnostic accuracy, and streamlines lab operations, marking a new era in diagnostic testing.

In the realm of diagnostic testing, the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) has emerged as a critical tool. However, the interpretation of PCR results often requires manual computation, which can be time-consuming and prone to errors. This is where MedX LIMS, with its digital PCR worksheet, comes into play.

The PCR Challenge

PCR is a powerful technique that amplifies specific DNA sequences, making it invaluable in diagnosing diseases. However, PCR doesn't provide final results. Instead, it gives results for each target, and personnel must compute the final result manually. This process can be complex and prone to human error, affecting the accuracy and reliability of the results.

The MedX LIMS Solution

MedX LIMS, or LabXpert LIMS, is a digital solution designed to streamline diagnostic processes. It is a 100% paperless system that eliminates over 95% of manual transcription and interpretation, leading to improved quality and faster results. The system is designed to interface directly with diagnostic equipment, reducing the need for manual data entry and interpretation.

The Power of the Digital PCR Worksheet

The digital PCR worksheet of MedX LIMS is a game-changer. It simplifies the interpretation of PCR results by automating the computation process. This not only saves time but also minimizes the risk of errors associated with manual calculations. The digital worksheet provides a clear, easy-to-understand presentation of the results, making it easier for personnel to interpret and act on the data.

A Practical Example

Consider an example of a PCR test done on a Bio-Rad system using a Seegene test kit, such as the Allplex™ SARS-CoV-2 Assay, which is designed to detect three different target genes of SARS-CoV-2: E gene, RdRP gene, and N gene.

In a traditional manual process, the PCR machine provides Ct (Cycle threshold) values for each target gene. Something like this;

Sample ID E Gene Ct Value RdRP Gene Ct Value N Gene Ct Value Interpretation
001 28.5 30.2 29.1
002 Undetermined Undetermined Undetermined
003 32.1 33.5 31.7
004 27.8 29.3 28.2

Now the lab scientist must to refer to the AllplexTM 2019-nCoV Assay package insert for the interpretation table of the kit. Basing on these personnel must interpret these results accordingly for each sample in the PCR plate.

With the MedX LIMS interpretation rules that can be easily configured on the system when the kit is introduced into the lab. Here is example of one such configuration.

When the PCR machine completes amplification, the results are directly uploaded into the system. Basing on the configured target threshold, the digital worksheet automatically using the Ct values for each target gene, determines whether the target gene is positive, or negative.

Basing on the result of each target, it determines whether the result is positive, negative or inconclusive based on predefined interpretation rules. The interpretation is then presented in a clear, easy-to-understand format. This automation not only improves the speed and accuracy of results but also enhances the overall quality of diagnostic testing.

Supported Instruments

PCR instruments. Currently, the digital PCR worksheet supports instruments including the QuantStudio(TM) 7 Flex System, 7500 Real-Time PCR System, Rotor Gene Q, Bio-Rad CFX96, Mygo Pro, Liferiver MIC, Slan 96P Real Time PCR System, Thermo Cycler CK160C, LongGene RT-PCR, ABi Step One Plus, Quant Studio 5 RT-PCR System, and many others.

Each of these instruments has been tested and verified to work seamlessly with the MedX LIMS digital PCR worksheet, ensuring accurate and efficient interpretation of PCR results. If your lab uses a PCR instrument not listed above, it can be easily added to the system

Easy Configuration for Any Kit

One of the standout features of the MedX LIMS digital PCR worksheet is its ease of configuration. If your lab decides to use a new PCR kit, the system can be quickly and easily adjusted to accommodate the specific rules of that kit. This includes the interpretation of Ct values, the identification of target genes, and any other specific requirements the kit may have.

This ease of configuration means that the digital PCR worksheet can keep pace with the rapidly evolving field of PCR testing, where new kits are constantly being developed and existing ones are regularly updated.

Proven Impact

MedX LIMS has already shown its effectiveness, with over 2 million test results processed and disseminated. It has been implemented in over 500 commercial and government labs in Ethiopia, Uganda, and South Sudan, with drastic improvements in turnaround time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the digital PCR worksheet of MedX LIMS is revolutionizing the interpretation of PCR results. By automating the computation process, it not only improves the speed and accuracy of results but also enhances the overall quality of diagnostic testing. With MedX LIMS, we are one step closer to achieving diagnostic excellence.
